Spur and helical sun gears can both be used in planetary gear stages, but they are not interchangeable versions of the same part. A helical design adds helix angle and hand, changes the force system and requires matching helical geometry across the mating planet gears.

Spur Sun Gears
Spur teeth run parallel to the gear axis. Their geometry is comparatively direct to describe, and the mesh does not create the same axial force component associated with helical teeth. That can simplify bearing and housing load paths in some designs.
Helical Sun Gears
Helical teeth enter mesh progressively across the face and can provide greater overlap. The tradeoff is an axial force component and additional geometry that must match: normal module or DP, pressure angle, helix angle and hand.
Side-by-side selection questions
| Tooth definition | Spur: module/DP + PA + tooth count. Helical: add helix angle/hand and confirm the normal/transverse convention. |
|---|---|
| Axial force | Spur: no helix-generated axial component. Helical: bearing structure must manage axial load. |
| Mating planets | Must match the chosen tooth system in both cases; helix data becomes especially critical for helical sets. |
| Manufacturing | Both can be hobbed or otherwise generated; hard-finished configurations may be ground when required. |
| Replacement risk | Spur geometry is easier to identify, but neither should be copied from OD/tooth count alone. Helical hand/angle errors are particularly serious. |
Do not choose tooth form from noise claims alone
System noise and smoothness depend on more than the Sun Gear tooth line. Gear quality, microgeometry, bearing support, housing stiffness, lubrication, alignment and the complete planet/ring set all contribute. Select spur or helical architecture during gearbox design, then manufacture the replacement to that architecture rather than trying to change tooth form during sourcing.
RFQ data for a helical replacement
Provide the normal module or DP convention, tooth count, pressure angle, helix angle, right- or left-hand direction, face width, profile modification if specified, spline/shaft details and the mating planet drawing. A clear photo helps confirm hand, but it is not a substitute for a dimensioned drawing.
